[ALBUM REVIEW] M.I.A - /\/\ /\ Y /\ [XL Records]

Maya Arulpragasam, other wise known as British-Sri Lankan artist M.I.A, released a self-entitled third album earlier this month adding to her musically innovative catalogue. The album follows the success of tracks such as "O… Saya", featured in the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack, and massive hit "Paper Planes" released three years prior to this much anticipated album.

Now personally, I haven't followed M.I.A's music in depth and to be fair had been more interested in her artistic imagery more than anything, so listening to this album has given me a greater introduction to her passionate, artistic music and it did take some effort to accustom my ears to the sound of her brash lyrics and choppy beats.

With input from producers like UK's Rusko, Switch her brother Sugu and U.S. producers Blaqstarr and Diplo every track is filled with surprises.  To the untrained ear one may confuse the electro infusion of politics, creativity and raw expression for blind, unapologetic noise but with each listen the sound of   sirens, alarms ringing and explosions slowly grow into the sweet sound of  ingenious breakbeat.

Now, I'm unable to make reference to the album in progression from her previous two but I am able to give you a couple of pointers to which tracks to listen for so check them out below:
